Barbara Curtis
I have been working with clay for 25 years. I also teach classes at
the Guild. Functional, handthrown pieces are my focus, but I also
make handbuilt and sculptural pieces. My passion is Raku, an ancient
Japanese process of firing. It is low-fire and usually takes only
about an hour to reach temperature. Then the pots are removed from
the kiln with tongs and placed in a reduction chamber with flammable
material such as sawdust and straw. How much oxidation the pot
receives determines the color of the glaze.
