Jennifer Quilling
Sculpting is often a surprising process for me. From the moment I start a new piece until it is finished, I am in a state of wonder. Whether a grand gargoyle, a timid dragon or simply a serene face, each piece is a joy to create.
My sculptures often embrace the imperfect. Faces are not even, bodies a bit quirky, and creatures are born from some previously unknown corner of my imagination. My greatest satisfaction comes when I am able to sculpt “character” and “personality” in a piece that make it as endearing to others as it is to me.
I continue to experiment with different clays and finishes to find what will best bring each piece to life. Lately I have been using cold finishes such as washes, acrylic paints and metallic surfacers, finished with wax or an acrylic spray for outdoor pieces. All are hand built, one-of-a kind sculptures.
